Sprinters Showcased in the $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap
Some of the top sprinters in the country will compete in Saturdays Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga. With a purse of $350,000, the six-furlong contest has drawn a field of eight.
The morning line favorite at odds of 5-2 is the lightly-raced Bakken. Trained by Chad Brown, the $450,000 yearling purchase will be making only his second start of the year and will have regular rider Javier Castellano aboard. As a sophomore, he won his initial two starts impressively before a fifth-place finish in the Malibu (G1). He returned off of a six-month hiatus to finish second in the True North (G2) at Belmont Park in June.
Happy My Way continuing to improve
Second choice at 3-1 is Happy My Way, a four-year-old gelded son of Wilko trained by Joe Orseno. He has won his last three starts and has ascended the class ladder with each one, most recently earning his first graded stakes win in the Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3). Popular jockey “Jersey” Joe Bravo will remain in the irons after piloting him to his last three victories. The pair will break from post position five.
Bahamian Squall trying to avenge 2013 runner-up effort
Also in the field is Bahamian Squall, tabbed at 8-1 on the morning line for trainer David Fawkes. The five-year-old son of Gone West is a homebred for owner Donald Dizney and will be making his second start of the year. He was second in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt last year to Justin Phillip. He was last seen finishing third in the Housebuster Stakes at Gulfstream Park and will have Luis Saez back aboard.
