New York-bred fillies and mares will be showcased on Thursday at Saratoga in the 11th running of the $100,000 Union Avenue Stakes. The six and a half furlong contest has drawn a field of six.
Risky Rachel has been installed as the 7-5 morning line favorite for trained Juan Coronel. The multiple stakes winning mare returned to action this year after being sidelined for the entire year in 2013 and has won two of her six starts. Javier Castellano will be in the irons and was aboard when she won the Union Avenue in 2012. The seven-year-old daughter of Limehouse will break from post position two.
Sunny Desert returning off of a layoff
Sunny Desert is the second choice on the morning line at 8-5 and will break from post position three under Irad Ortiz, Jr. Trained by Bruce Levine, the five-year-old daughter of Wild Desert is making her first start since her seasonal debut in March where she was third against restricted stakes company at Aqueduct. A five-time winner against fellow state-bred competition, she has won eight of her fifteen starts including a victory at Saratoga in 2012.
Vicki's Dancer trying for first win of the year
Rudy Rodriguez will send out Vicki’s Dancer at odds of 6-1 on the morning line. The five-year-old daughter of Disco Rico will have John Velazquez aboard following a sixth-place finish on the turf at Saratoga on August 4. She is attempting to earn her first win of the year and has been on the board three times against stakes company. The stakes-winning mare has won five of her twenty-three starts.
