Hubba Shake and Platinum Price Likely to Improve In Juvenile Turf
Handicapping two year-old turf races is sometimes more a game of projection than hard analysis of data a notion that might prove particularly useful November 8 in the $100,000 Juvenile Turf Preview at Gulfstream Park West.
Hubba Shake (5/2) and Platinum Price (10/1) both have the look of horses likely to improve off their recent efforts. Most horses that show an ability to run on grass in their initial attempt on that surface show marked improvement when trying grass for the second time. Hubba Shake and Platinum Price are both going second time grass for their respective connections.
Hubba Shake looks to improve off stakes score
Hubba Shake’s first start on grass was his last start – which was also the first two-turn race of his career and stakes debut. Despite all the firsts, the Martin Wolfson trainee settled early, circled the field like an old pro and won by half a length over The Big Mystery, who was a next-out winner. Hubba Shake’s 68 Beyer Speed Figure matches up well against today’s rivals, but it is reasonable to project a figure 5-10 points higher in the Juvenile Turf.
Platinum Price a great value play
Platinum Price also made his turf debut in his last start – a five furlong turf sprint at Gulfstream West against maiden special weight foes. He tracked a wickedly fast pace -with a quarter mile split of 20 4/5 seconds and half mile split of 44 2/5 seconds – before taking command in the stretch and earning a 71 Beyer Speed Figure. Platinum Price is bred top and bottom to go longer as a son of champion turf horse Leroidesanimaux out of a Mizzen Mast mare.
