Competitive Field of Ten in The Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park
On Wednesday, three-year-old fillies will take to the turf in the $50,000 Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park. The race will be run at a distance of about one mile on the grass and has drawn a field of ten, including undefeated Italian stakes winner Black Elegance (IRE) who will make her United States debut.
The slight morning line favorite set at odds of 7-2 is Battlefield Angel, a daughter of Proud Citizen trained by Kellyn Gorder. Daniel Centeno is slated to be in the irons for the first time. In her most recent start and first attempt on turf at Arlington Park, the chestnut filly won by four-lengths against allowance/optional claiming company and has now won two of her six starts. She will break from post position eight in the field of ten.
Black Elegance (IRE) makes her United States debut
Second choice at 4-1 is Black Elegance (IRE) who will be making her first start stateside and her first start since June of 2013. Bred in Ireland and raced in Italy, the bay daughter of Footstepsinthesand (GB) was two-for-two as a juvenile. She will be making her first start for trainer Richard Mettee and Kendrick Carmouche will be aboard carrying the green and red colors of Barry Irwin’s Team Valor International.
Six-figure juvenile tries for a stakes win
Also in the field is Queenie’s Song, 9-2 on the morning line for Graham Motion. A $350,000 purchase as a juvenile, the gray daughter of Unbridled’s Song will be making her stakes debut and has two wins from four starts to her credit. She was last seen finishing fifth against optional claiming competition at Gulfstream in March. Alex Cintron has been named to ride for the first time.
