Despite not having a turf victory and just two tries over the surface, Majestic Harbor (7/2) is the lukewarm morning line favorite. The Paul McGee trainee has won two straight on dirt against allowance foes, but ran eighth in his most recent turf outing - the February 7 Grade 2 San Marcos at Santa Anita. Majestic Harbor is the class of the field based on his Grade 1 victory in the 2014 Gold Cup, but hasn’t come close to duplicating that performance in his seven starts since. The seven year-old son of Rockport Harbor has won 8 of 31 starts in his career for earnings of $668,914.
2013 KY Derby runner-up returns
Golden Soul (4/1) is another classy performer on dirt with a second place finish in the 2013 Kentucky Derby his most notable achievement. Trained by Dallas Stewart, Golden Soul has won just two of seven career turf starts and has just three wins in 21 career efforts. The five year-old has not raced since a ninth place finish February 21 at Fair Grounds against allowance foes on the grass.
Casse runner back on best surface
Patrioticandproud (9/2) is an intriguing item for trainer Mark Casse as the gelding finally gets back on turf after competing in two consecutive off-the-turf events. Patrioticandproud managed to run third and second respectively in those races and was defeated both times by Majestic Harbor, but is clearly much better on turf where he finished second in a pair of grade 2 stakes races in November of 2014 and January of this year.
