First contested in 1928, the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap is currently a $350,000 Grade 2 race for three-year-olds and up going 1 1/4 miles on the dirt at Hawthorne Race Course. Historically the race has been run in November, although there was no race in 1934 and 1936, as well in the years 1940-45 or in 1978 when the grandstand at Hawthorne was destroyed in a fire. While Hawthorne was being rebuilt, the 1979 race was held at Sportsman’s Park and run at 1 1/8 miles. The record time for the race is 1:59.80, set by Gladwin in 1970 and equalled by Group Plan in 1974.

Did you know?

The first race was won by Display, who two years earlier had won the Preakness Stakes. This was followed by three straight wins by US Racing Hall of Fame member Sun Beau, who was also three times named the US Champion Older Male Horse (1929-31). Although no other horse has managed three Gold Cup wins, Round Table (1957-58), No Double (1968-69) and Cryptoclearance (1988-89) all managed back-to-back wins. That first win by Cryptoclearance also established the largest winning margin in the race at 10 lengths. Cryptoclearance would go on to sire Valponi, who won the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Classic at odds of 44-1.
